How Ladybugs Got Their Name
In the middle ages, farmers were having great difficulty controlling the pests that plagued their crops. Those pests were aphids and other plant chewing critters. In an attempt to fix this problem, they resorted to praying to the virgin mother Mary, to help them with this terrible problem. In a short time their prayers were answered with the arrival of beetles. From then on, these bugs became known as “Beetles of Our Lady”. Over time, this name has become Ladybug, Ladybird, Lady Beetle, Ladybug Beetle, etc. So as you can see, throughout history, Ladybugs have been viewed as a gift from heaven!!!
Ladybug, "The Farmer’s Friend"
Wayne Carpenter utilized the placement of Ladybugs into his Grain Sorghum and Cotton fields as a young farmer. He brought in the Ladybugs from California. They came packaged in 10 lb. cotton bags filled with freight straw and 75,000 hungry ladybugs. Wayne carefully placed the ladybugs into his fields of cotton and grain sorghum after sunset. They quickly devoured the aphids and other crop pests in his fields assuring Wayne of consistent high yields across his farm.
Wayne Carpenter never forgot the role of the Farmer’s Friend, the Ladybug on his farm. This important role of the Ladybug as the farmer’s friend is synonymous to the role of Giant Seed Company. The Ladybug participates in all of Giant 's Customer's fields. Giant Seed is proud to bear the Ladybug icon on it's logo.
